Movie Review: The BFG

movie review of the bfg
Being massive fans of Roald Dahl and the original movie being a childhood favourite, we were counting down the days until the new adaptation was released in cinemas. We were there on the first day, tickets in hand and eager to get in and see what the directors had come up with. First up; before we went in we really didn’t know how they were going to portray the BFG at all – not being a cartoon n’ all that. Mary Rylance (BFG) really did a great job. He had the BFG down to a T and Ruby Barnhill (Sophie) played the character exactly how we remembered. The major difference in the movie, we thought, was the fact that the giants weren’t really scary. From what we can remember, the giants absolutely petrified us, we had nightmares for years. This time round, they were quite comical and pretty stupid. That may just be because we are so much older now, who knows, but the kiddos definitely laughed throughout the movie.

The appearance from the queen also had us in stitches, we won’t ruin it for you, but it was a good little giggle.

Was it as good as the original? Are they ever? We didn’t enjoy it as much as we expected, it was good for a bit of nostalgia, but we 100% prefer the original. Having said that, we will be watching it again this weekend, so if that changes, we will let you know.
