Get ready for a cinematic treat this week as the Sussex International Film Festival lights up the iconic Hailsham Pavilion! Running from Thursday 14th Nov to Saturday 16th Nov, this three-day festival is packed with local gems, award-winning films, and global short film competition finalists. Organised by the dedicated Board of Hailsham Pavilion Ltd, with invaluable support from Paul Simmons and the Pavilion team, the festival aims to raise the profile of this beloved cinema both locally and nationally.
Festival Highlights and Films You Can’t Miss
This year’s festival will showcase a selection of three feature films alongside a range of short films that are both inspiring and innovative.
- Mr. Holmes – Kicking off the festival on Thursday evening, this moving tale stars Ian McKellen as an ageing Sherlock Holmes. Set in Sussex, and with one scene filmed at Hailsham Pavilion, it’s a fitting start for this local-focused festival.
- Summerland – Then on Saturday afternoon for this World War II story starring Gemma Arterton. Filmed locally, the supervising music editor was none other than Richard Todman, one of the festival’s judges. It’s a beautifully shot film that showcases the British spirit.
- Hot Fuzz – Wrapping up Saturday night, this comedy classic by Edgar Wright is known for its sharp humor and dynamic editing. The head judge, Oscar-winner Chris Dickens, who edited this film, will be present for the awards ceremony on Friday.
International Short Film Competition
Interwoven with these feature films, audiences will enjoy screenings from the International Short Film Competition finalists. With nearly 200 entries from across the globe, the festival offers a unique chance to witness standout shorts and animations that aren’t available elsewhere. It’s a showcase of immense talent, with selections including shorts made in Sussex and works by emerging British filmmakers.
Special Free Screening: The Midnight Elves
On Saturday at 11:45 am, don’t miss a free premiere of the heartwarming Christmas short film The Midnight Elves by Shining Knight Productions. This 8-minute film, filmed in Hailsham, brings the playful tradition of mischievous holiday elves to life. No ticket is needed, so just turn up and enjoy!
