5 Things That Happened If You Grew Up In Eastbourne [90s Edition]

5 Things That Happened If You Grew Up In Eastbourne in the 90s

1. You thought that there were sharks in the wave machine at the Sovereign Centre (there were not)
Quite possibly the most irrational childhood fear ever! If you were in the deep end when the waves came on you were most certainly a goner. And don’t even think about putting your legs through the shark cage (wave machine) barriers as you of course wouldn’t get it out because of that pesky great white shark behind the bars who would obviously eat it.

2. You went to the OLD Fusciardis for your birthday ice cream and to listen to the clock chime
We did this every single year, We went for a huge ice cream and stayed until the clocks chimed. It’s now called favoloso.
We haven’t been since it’s changed hands and we kind of miss having a huge ice cream once a year, even though ice cream is far too cold to eat now and you need a 3 hour nap afterwards

3. You learnt to skate at the Hampden Park Roller Disco
Every weekend, if we remember correctly. It was all about the Bauers back then and if you had a pair you were the coolest kid at the disco. Even better if you were there when the Gladiators came to visit. Anyone still got a signed postcard from Ace? *insert laughing face emojis here*

4. Curly fries at the Sovereign Centre were the only reason you went swimming
We hear that they still serve curly fries at the Sovereign Centre. We can’t confirm that they actually do or if they are as good as they were when we were 12, but the rumour is they are still on the menu. That is 100% a reason to pretend you’re going swimming or the gym, but never actually make it to the changing rooms!

5. You met your friends outside of McDonalds every Saturday at midday
It was the days before mobile phones (yes people didn’t walk around with phones in their hands) and if we wanted to call our friends and find out where they were if they were late we had to call their parents on a PAY PHONE and ask if they had actually left the house or remembered that they were meant to meet you. It was super annoying if said parent wasn’t actually at home.
